Why seven generations

The seven-generation principle is older than any of the institutions that now invoke it. Carried in Haudenosaunee law and echoed across many indigenous and traditional governance systems, it asks decision-makers to weigh the consequences of present action against the lives of those seven generations hence — roughly one hundred and forty-four years from any present moment.

The framework treats this horizon literally. Not as a rhetorical reach toward the long term, but as the actual time scale at which questions of value, settlement, and accountability are resolved. What looks defensible across a quarterly cycle, an electoral cycle, or even a single human career often does not survive examination at this scale. That examination is the framework’s primary discipline.

What changes at this scale

At a 144-year horizon, the distinction between principal and yield collapses. The distinction between investor, beneficiary, and trustee blurs. The very notion of an exit becomes incoherent: there is no point at which the holder of long-duration value steps away cleanly, because the systems that produced and sustained that value continue, and remain accountable, long after any individual transaction is closed.

This is not a constraint to be worked around. It is a feature of the actual world that conventional frameworks have spent a century treating as if it were not there. The Regenerative Wealth Reserve takes it as a starting point.

A working substrate, not a future state

The seven-generation horizon is not aspirational. Pieces of it are already operating — in indigenous-led financial institutions, in long-dated sovereign instruments, in resource-accounting frameworks descended from the Hartwick Rule, in trust structures designed to outlast their settlors. The framework’s contribution is not to invent the horizon but to make it legible: to articulate the pattern that is already forming, to give it a name, and to invite further work along its grain.
